The Escola Profissional de Música was created in 1992, and it is owned, since 1999, by the Átrio da Música Foundation. It is a specialized music school that functions on a integrated education basis. The school provides the disciplines of the regular curriculum and the specific components for music education.It is a private school supervised scientifically and pedagogically by the Ministry of Education and has teaching, administrative and financial autonomy.

The school offers the aspiring musician rigorous curricula in performance in 3 areas of study:

- strings
- winds
- percussion

The programs of study are designed to develop skilled performers who are familiar with the standard solo, ensemble, and orchestral literature for their instruments. Students must demonstrate a high degree of professional competence and appropriate stylistic approaches to the literature of various historical periods

School population is 130 students (ages from 12 to 18 years old) who, mostly, come from the district of Viana do Castelo.
